Discussion at the Kremlin: No Plans for Three-Way Meeting Involving Putin, Trump, and Zelensky Discussed
The recent bilateral discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump have opened the door for continued efforts to find solutions to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The talks, held in Anchorage, Alaska, have been marked by a personal touch, with First Lady Melania Trump writing a letter to President Putin about the plight of children in Ukraine and Russia. The two leaders also held a joint press conference, during which Putin called on Ukraine and the Europeans not to undermine a peace solution "through provocations or intrigues behind the scenes."
Following the summit, Trump described the meeting as very productive and achieved agreement on many points. He also rated his conversation with Putin as 10 out of 10. The possibility of a future meeting, perhaps even in Russia, was casually discussed.
The proposed trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the USA, and Russia is seen as a potential next step. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to travel to Washington on Monday to discuss a possible end to the war with Russia with President Trump. The USA is set to play a facilitating role in this proposed summit.
European leaders, including those from the European Commission, France, Germany, Italy, the UK, Finland, Poland, and the European Council, have expressed readiness to support this trilateral meeting. Their support is contingent on Ukraine's decisions regarding its territory and firmly upholds that international borders must not be changed by force.
The core aims of the prospective trilateral meeting include securing security guarantees for Ukraine, discussing ceasefire measures, and ultimately working toward a just and lasting peace to end Russia's war of aggression. However, significant challenges remain, as Russia has been accused of delaying negotiations without committing to concrete steps to end the conflict.
Preliminary steps involve video calls among a coalition of 31 countries supporting Ukraine, ahead of Zelenskyy’s planned visit to Washington, where broader multilateral backing for the process is being mobilized. The outcomes and timing of the trilateral meeting remain subject to ongoing diplomatic efforts and political will from all parties involved.
Meanwhile, the situation on the ground remains tense. A woman was killed and three others injured in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Donetsk, according to occupation authorities. An explosion in a Russian munitions factory in the region of Rjasan has resulted in at least 9 deaths and 120 injuries.
The German government is reacting cautiously after the end of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The Russian air regiment stationed on the annexed Crimea has lost more than half of its Su-30SM fighter jets since the spring of 2022.
Before departing from the Alaska summit, Putin visited the graves of Soviet soldiers in the city of Anchorage, expressing hope that the talks would pave the way for peace in Ukraine. Trump, on the other hand, plans to call NATO partners after his meeting with Putin to brief them on the discussions.
- The trilateral meeting, which may involve Ukraine, the USA, and Russia, could potentially be influenced by both community policies and general news, such as war-and-conflicts, politics, and general-news, as they related to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
- As the possibility of a trilateral meeting arises, employment policies might need to be considered and agreed upon by all parties involved, particularly regarding the USA's role as a facilitator and the European Union's support, with their shared aim of ensuring security guarantees for Ukraine, securing a just and lasting peace, and upholding the sanctity of international borders.
