'Discussion Approval': PSD and PS endorse contentious plan, yet stress the importance of balance
In the digital age, the safety of children online has become a pressing concern. The European Union is currently negotiating a regulation aimed at combating the sexual abuse of children on the internet, formally known as the "Regulation on combating the sexual abuse of children," often referred to as the "Chat Control" regulation.
This regulation, if passed, would require messaging platforms to monitor their content for signs of child sexual abuse. The initiative for this regulation was proposed by the liberal party to the Parliament, with the purpose of ensuring a safer online environment for children.
However, the proposal has not been met with unanimous support. The PSD and PS political parties have rejected this initiative, as well as any others that advise the Government to reject this specific regulation.
The Government, too, is considering this regulation, but the decision is not yet final. It's worth noting that the journalist Liliana Coelho has been reporting on this issue, providing insights and updates to the public.
The controversy surrounding this regulation highlights the complexities of balancing privacy concerns with the need to protect children from online harm. As the negotiations continue, it remains to be seen how this regulation will shape the digital landscape and the safety measures in place to protect children.
