Comparing the modern world to the era of the Carnation Revolution, he questioned: "Aren't we confronted with the same challenges that underpinned Pope Francis' appeals for over a decade?"
Francis, a revered figure known for his emphasis on social justice, climate change, and championing the marginalized, passed away five days prior at the age of 88. According to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, "His messages, echoing the same calls for peace, justice, and overcoming poverty, are as relevant now as they were then."
In the conclusion of his discourse, the President asked: "What lessons does Pope Francis' life and work hold for a nation, now and on this historic date?"
"All of it: human dignity, peace, justice, equality, solidarity, fraternity, openness, inclusion, service to others, compassion for the forgotten and the disregarded," he asserted.
