Discussants huddled around the negotiation table during the Alaska Summit

The Alaska Summit, scheduled for an undisclosed date, promises to be a significant diplomatic event, bringing together six prominent figures from the United States and Russia for high-level discussions.

In attendance from the US delegation are Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State, Steve Witkoff as the Special Envoy for Peace Missions, Pete Hegseth as the Secretary of Defense, Scott Bessent as the Secretary of the Treasury, Howard Lutnick as the Secretary of Commerce, Susie Wiles as the White House Chief of Staff, and Dan Caine, the Joint Chiefs Chairman. Each of these individuals brings expertise in diplomacy, defense, economic policy, administration, and commerce to the table.

On the Russian side, the delegation includes Sergey Lavrov, the Foreign Minister, and Yuri Ushakov, the Presidential Adviser for Foreign Policy. Both officials are instrumental in shaping Russia's foreign policy and representing its interests in negotiations.

The expanded "three-on-three" setup, with additional attendees for the working lunch, signifies a shift from the initially expected one-on-one meeting between the two presidents. This broader engagement allows senior officials to bring their expertise to discussions on the Russia-Ukraine conflict and broader U.S.-Russia relations.

The Alaska Summit is a significant opportunity for both leaders and their delegations to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. President Donald Trump, who had previously promised to end the war immediately after taking office, is expected to express his growing dissatisfaction with the lack of progress towards a ceasefire and peace in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin is anticipated to react to demands for a comprehensive and unconditional ceasefire during the summit.

Notably, Marco Rubio, initially a public critic of Putin, has become more restrained in his public criticisms as Trump's Secretary of State. However, Rubio has publicly criticized the Ukraine more critically in his current role. On the other hand, Steve Witkoff, a long-time friend of President Trump, has been appointed as a special envoy for various peace missions, including the Russian attack on Ukraine during Trump's second term.

The Alaska Summit is seen as a diplomatic success for Putin, marking his return to the world stage after years of isolation in the West. The summit's focus on the Russia-Ukraine conflict and broader U.S.-Russia relations offers a unique opportunity for both sides to engage in meaningful dialogue and work towards a resolution to the ongoing conflict.

It is important to note that Keith Kellogg, the official US government's Ukraine envoy, is not participating in the Alaska Summit.
