In a recent incident, allegations of religious discrimination have surfaced during a Vueling flight from Spain to France. A group of approximately 44 to 50 French Jewish children, aged between 10 and 15, accompanied by adult chaperones, were removed from a Vueling flight at Valencia airport before departure.

According to the airline, the decision to remove the group was due to their disruptive behavior, which included tampering with emergency equipment such as life jackets and oxygen masks, posing a threat to flight safety. However, the group’s organizers and some parents claim that the removal was motivated by anti-Semitism, citing instances such as one of the teens singing a song in Hebrew and describing the event as discriminatory and violent.

French authorities, including the Foreign Ministry, have demanded explanations from Vueling, seeking to determine whether the removal was based on religious discrimination. The French Foreign Minister expressed deep concern and requested an internal investigation by Vueling. The airline has confirmed that it has launched such an investigation and committed to sharing findings with authorities in France and Spain.

The controversy has escalated diplomatically between France and Spain, particularly after contentious remarks by the Spanish Transport Minister, which France strongly condemned. Videos showing the arrest and handcuffing of the group’s director, a female chaperone, further intensified allegations of mistreatment.

While Vueling and Spanish authorities maintain the removal was due to safety-related disruptive behavior, the group and French officials suspect and are investigating potential religious discrimination against Jewish minors during the incident.

Some passengers, according to Vueling, engaged in highly disruptive behavior and adopted a confrontational attitude, potentially risking the safety of the flight. The airline asked the children to leave a Paris-bound plane in Valencia due to their disruptive behavior. The group mishandled emergency equipment and disrupted the mandatory safety demonstration, repeatedly ignoring instructions from cabin crew.

The incident has affected children as young as 12 and 13, with the mother of a 17-year-old boy stating that the group was returning from a two-week summer camp. The mother of one of the children, Karine Lamy, called the incident an "anti-Semitic act". Club Kineret's lawyer, Julie Jacob, has announced the intention to file a complaint for physical and psychological violence, discrimination based on religion, and disruptive behavior.

The arrested person refused to disembark the plane and obey the officers, but was later released. Once at the terminal, the group’s behavior continued to be aggressive, leading to the arrest of one person. The mother described the incident as the children being disembarked like dogs.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing, with both Vueling and Spanish authorities denying any religious motivation, while the group and French officials are investigating potential religious discrimination. The incident has sparked concern and debate, highlighting the importance of addressing and preventing such incidents in the future.
