Discrepancies in reports from Ukrainian and Russian sides regarding battlefront developments

In the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, Russian forces have been attempting to push forward, but their progress has been met with resistance from Ukrainian forces.

According to Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, Russian forces have made territorial gains around the city of Pokrovsk, as reported by Russian agencies. However, the current position of the Russian forces in Pokrovsk is severely compromised. Their offensive has fragmented into uncoordinated, small-group attacks with failed encirclement attempts. Ukrainian forces have successfully repelled these attacks, liberated key areas, and inflicted heavy losses. As a result, the Russian efforts to regain substantial ground around Pokrovsk have collapsed, according to reports from mid to late September 2025.

In Kupiansk, situated in the Kharkiv region, Russian forces attempted to bypass Ukrainian defensive lines by crawling through a pipeline. However, a gas pipeline used by the Russian soldiers was destroyed, potentially hampering their advance. Despite the attempt to attack from the rear, there were no changes in positions reported in Kupiansk.

Intense fighting has been reported along almost all front sections, with both Russian and Ukrainian armed forces acknowledging the conflict. A total of 117 engagements were reported along the entire front line, but there were no changes in positions, according to the General Staff in Kyiv.

Ukrainian military sources reported that larger Russian units in the area around Pokrovsk had been encircled. The surrender of these encircled Russian units is expected soon, according to these sources.

However, an independent assessment of the situation was not possible due to conflicting accounts from both sides. Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov stated that Russian forces are advancing in almost all directions.

The ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine continues to present challenges for both sides, with each side attempting to gain an advantage over the other. The situation remains fluid, with changes in positions and tactics on both sides.
