Discovered remnants suspected as those of the Washington father under accusation for murdering his 3 daughters
In a chilling development, the remains believed to be those of Travis Decker, a man suspected of killing his three young daughters, were found in a remote wooded area south of Leavenworth. The discovery was made during a search by authorities, who had been searching for Decker for over three months. According to the Chelan County Sheriff's Office, the person ran from sight but was later tracked with dogs to a nearby trailhead. Preliminary DNA analysis results suggest that the remains found likely belong to Decker. A DNA analysis will be done to confirm the identity of the remains.
The tragic story began a few days before the girls' bodies were found, when Travis Decker, who had a planned visitation with his daughters, did not return them and could not be reached by phone. This prompted a search and a request from local police to have an Amber alert sent out the Friday before the girls were found dead, but the request was declined. The reason given for the denial was that the request did not meet strict criteria set by the U.S. Justice Department. A different alert was sent out on the Saturday following the request, accomplishing similar public notification.
Travis Decker's ex-wife, Whitney Decker, called for reforms to the Amber alert system after their daughters' deaths. Whitney Decker told the detective her ex-husband had always been communicative about their children and previously returned them when he was supposed to. However, a copy of the parenting plan shows that Decker refused to sign it. The plan, which was in effect since September 2024, required Decker to seek mental health treatment and domestic violence anger-management counseling, but he had not done so, according to the affidavit.
The affidavit also states that the girls' bodies had plastic bags over their heads and were zip-tied, suggesting they died of asphyxiation. On June 10, authorities believed they had tracked Decker to an area near the remote campsite where his daughters were found dead. A different hiking party reported seeing someone who appeared unprepared for the trail and the weather and appeared to be avoiding others. The person was spotted by helicopter and was later tracked with dogs to a nearby trailhead.
Officials shifted resources to focus on finding Decker's remains, assuming the likelihood of his death increases every day. Three weeks into the manhunt, authorities issued a statement casting doubt on whether Decker remained alive. Whitney Decker spoke publicly about her daughters' killings for the first time in late June.
The search for Decker and the investigation into the murders of his daughters continue. The community mourns the loss of the three young girls and hopes for justice in this tragic case.
