Discovered Fire Bomb in Berlin, According to Experts

In a series of unexpected events, two major bomb defusal operations have taken place in Berlin, Germany, affecting thousands of residents.

On a chilly morning in July 2023, construction workers in Marzahn made a shocking discovery—an unexploded ordnance from World War II. This led to the evacuation of around 15,000 people, marking one of the largest evacuations in the capital due to a bomb defusal. Similar events occurred in December 2021, when another bomb was found in Gesundbrunnen, causing the evacuation of a similar number of residents.

In a more recent development, a 100-kilogram Russian unexploded ordnance was found in Berlin-Spandau on Wednesday. This discovery prompted the establishment of a restricted area and the evacuation of around 12,400 residents. The bomb was discovered during construction work at the Mühlendamm sluice on the Fischerinsel, a site once part of the oldest part of the medieval town of Cölln.

Despite the evacuations, certain establishments within the restricted areas were exempt. The Vivantes hospital group, located in the restricted area, was not to be evacuated. However, the emergency room could not be accessed during the defusal. Patient care at the hospital continued without restriction.

Among the buildings in the restricted areas were a hospital, a care facility, a primary school, and two kindergartens. Thankfully, both the bomb found in Berlin-Mitte and the one in Spandau were deemed not dangerous during inspections, and the incendiary bomb was classified as harmless.

As a result of the bomb defusal in Spandau, a portion of the Havel had to be closed. The bomb was safely removed from the Spree and will be disposed of properly. Residents in Berlin-Mitte were allowed to return to their apartments after the bomb in Berlin-Mitte was defused.

To accommodate those who could not stay with relatives or friends during the evacuation, a temporary shelter was set up in a sports hall in Spandau. The restricted area cordoned off by the police in Berlin-Mitte has now been lifted.

Divers inspected the bomb in Berlin-Mitte early in the morning, and the bomb defusal operation in Spandau is planned to take place soon. Despite the disruptions, the residents of Berlin remain resilient, demonstrating a strong spirit in the face of these unexpected events.
