Sergio Garcia's Torre Golf Course Opens in Portugal's Alentejo Region
Nestled amidst endless rice fields in the countryside, Sergio Garcia's latest golf course design, Torre, has officially opened its doors. The course, located approximately an hour and a half south of Lisbon on Portugal's Alentejo coast, is a testament to Garcia's appreciation for his favourite course, Valderrama.
Torre shares key design features with Valderrama, such as small greens, challenging bunkering, dog-leg holes, and blind tee shots. However, it offers a more open, natural landscape, reflective of its unique setting. The course boasts Bermuda grass fairways and very small greens, contributing to its challenge and differentiating it slightly from Valderrama’s conditions.
The Torre course offers a strategic and varied playing experience, spanning over 41 hectares of natural landscape. It features six tees to choose from, providing a risk-and-reward challenge. The first hole is a downhill par-4 reminiscent of Valderrama, while the 18th hole is a par-5 with a sweeping left-to-right fairway off an elevated tee, offering a potential eagle opportunity for daring players. The par-3s are a highlight, designed to force strategic thinking and varied club selection.
Sergio Garcia shared his perspective on the Torre course with a media group via video link, emphasizing the course's emphasis on risk-and-reward elements and flow within the terrain. He also highlighted the par-3 13th hole, a downhill hole with a large green surrounded by bunkers, offering no room for error. The 5th hole is a short par 3 with a deep swale running through the green and protected by bunkers, adding to the course's strategic complexity.
Quinta da Comporta, a luxurious boutique hotel located on the edge of the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, offers potential relaxation opportunities. The Oryza Spa and infinity pool offer stunning views over the rice fields. The hotel's first-class high-beamed restaurant uses fresh ingredients from the hotel's garden, while the Comporta Cafe, located near Torre and Dunas courses, provides a beachside setting with fantastic food and ambiance, ideal for capping off a day of golf.
Quinta da Comporta is most suited for couples looking for a tranquil escape rather than large groups of golfers. The Torre course can be challenging, and a buggy is recommended, particularly for the climb between the 11th green and 12th tee.
Torre's opening marks a significant step in raising Terras da Comporta’s profile as a golf destination. In addition to the course, the area boasts first-class practice facilities, including a Sergio Garcia Golf Academy—the first of its kind in Portugal.

Overall, Torre reflects Garcia’s appreciation for Valderrama’s strategic complexity but adapts the design to a different environment with specific grass types and less dense vegetation, creating a distinct but familiar playing experience for golfers.
The Torre golf course, designed by Sergio Garcia, boasts a strategic and varied playing experience reminiscent of Valderrama's design, offering a unique twist with its open landscape and Bermuda grass fairways.
