Discover Charlotte Carrive's Remarkable Life at Saarlouis Library Event

Saarlouis City Library is set to host an intriguing event on Thursday, May 8, 2025, as part of Europaweeks. 'Three Times Madame Carrive' will take place at Theater am Ring from 7 PM, featuring a varied program of conversation, reading, and film, all centered around the remarkable life of Charlotte Carrive.

The event will delve into three works by Alfred Gulden about Charlotte Carrive: 'The Bags of Madame Carrive', 'Luck in Misfortune. The Story of Madame Carrive', and 'Les sacs de Madame Carrive'. Catherine Desbois, a renowned French-German translator, will speak about her work in translating Gulden's story collection into French and read selected passages. Julia Hennings, head of the cultural affairs office, will host the event.

The life of Charlotte Carrive, born in 1909 in Breslau, is a testament to courage and humanity. She offered refuge to Jewish refugees during National Socialism and passed away in 2002 at the age of 93 in Bordeaux. Gulden's film 'Luck in Misfortune. The Story of Madame Carrive' will be screened at the event, providing a visual perspective on Carrive's extraordinary story.

Doors open at 6:30 PM, and admission is free. 'Three Times Madame Carrive' promises to be an enlightening and thought-provoking evening, offering insights into the life of Charlotte Carrive and the power of translation in preserving and sharing such stories.
