Discourse spurring bold climate action: German Parliament tackles climate concerns raised by a thousand citizens
Going Green and Giving a Voice: The German Climate Chaos Mission
Germany's weather's turning wild and unpredictable, with droughts, wildfires, and floods posing a significant threat. Yet, over 80% of Germans believe the nation isn't prepared enough to tackle these climate extremes. This revelation comes from a survey conducted by Civey, for Together for Future and GermanZero, talking to 5,000 citizens across Germany.
To address this, an alliance of 110 associations and initiatives - including environmental powerhouses like WWF, Misereor, and Amnesty International, along with Bread for the World, the German Alpine Association, and Scientists for Future - are organizing the "Day of Climate Democracy" on June 14, 2025. On this day, ordinary citizens from all corners of Germany can get their climate-related questions answered by members of the Bundestag in a full-day video conference. elected representatives from CDU/CSU, SPD, Greens, and Left parties will be invited to join the dialogue.
With the Vice President of the Bundestag, Josephine Ortleb (SPD), and renowned moderator and author Ralph Caspers steering the show, the Day of Climate Democracy promises to be a pivotal event in Germany's fight against climate change. As Anna Schwanhäuser, founder of Together for Future, puts it: "Recent extreme droughts call for urgent action. We hope our dialogue will foster trust, pushing politicians to take substantial steps in combating climate change."
Michael Schäfer, CEO of GermanZero, echoes Schwanhäuser's sentiment, "The current government has allocated €500 billion to climate protection. We need to ensure these funds are used effectively to achieve our climate goals. Our dialogue aims to drive this conversation."
Interested citizens of all ages can register for this historic online dialogue with their parliamentary representatives at the website: https://tagderklimademokratie.de/dialog.
