"Discount retail chain, Save A Lot, debuts a new store layout aimed at serving Hispanic consumers"

In the ever-evolving world of grocery retail, Save A Lot, the largest independently owned and operated discount grocery store chain in the United States, is making a significant move. With approximately 700 stores in 30 states, Save A Lot has announced the launch of a new store format called Save A Lot y Mas.

This new concept is an extension of Save A Lot's commitment to delivering quality, culturally meaningful grocery experiences at affordable prices. The first Save A Lot y Mas store, located at 9430 Midland Boulevard, Overland, Mo., just outside of St. Louis, will host a carnival on July 9 to mark its grand opening.

Save A Lot y Mas is designed to cater specifically to the growing Hispanic market, which now comprises 20% of the U.S. population. The store will feature an expanded selection of fresh Hispanic produce, specialty meats, and bakery items, including traditional Mexican and Latin American groceries, fresh tortillas, traditional baked goods, and prepared meals.

The store's COO, Bill Mayo, stated that Save A Lot y Mas incorporates learnings from Ahorra Mucho and blends these best practices within the value-driven Save A Lot platform. The store will also introduce updated graphics and advertising designed to better connect with Spanish-speaking shoppers.

Hispanic households have been outpacing non-Hispanics in both dollar and unit sales growth over the past year. This trend, coupled with the fact that more than 25% of Gen Z and Gen Alpha consumers identify as Hispanic, makes the new Save A Lot y Mas store a strategic move for the company.

Save A Lot y Mas is not alone in this venture. Other grocery retailers, such as Vallarta Supermarkets and El Super, are well-known for catering to Hispanic tastes with authentic Mexican and Latin American groceries. These brands are significant providers where Hispanic shoppers tend to shop due to their specialized product offerings and cultural relevance.

In the food and grocery market, Hispanic consumers represent a rapidly growing demographic with strong purchasing power. They deliver 16% of total growth in the market, outspending non-Hispanic counterparts, which sustains the multicultural and ethnic food retail sector in the U.S.

Save A Lot's recognition in the industry is evident. The company was named among Progressive Grocer's Outstanding Independent Grocers of 2025 and is No. 58 on The PG 100, Progressive Grocer's 2025 list of the top food and consumables retailers in North America.

With the launch of Save A Lot y Mas, the company is poised to continue its growth and success in the grocery retail industry, catering to the needs and preferences of the growing Hispanic market. The new concept will operate as a test-and-learn format with the potential for further introduction into other Save A Lot locations serving a large Hispanic customer base.

Food solutions company SpartanNash recently celebrated the grand opening of its newest Supermercado Nuestra Familia, further demonstrating the rise of Hispanic supermarkets in the United States. Save A Lot's move into this sector is a testament to the importance of catering to diverse consumer needs and the potential for growth in the multicultural food retail market.

  1. In the midst of diversifying consumer preferences, Save A Lot y Mas, a new store format catering to the growing Hispanic market, marked its grand opening with a carnival, offering an expanded selection of fresh Hispanic produce, meats, bakery items, and prepared meals.
  2. As the Hispanic population in the United States continues to flourish, accounting for 20% of the total population, grocery retailers like Save A Lot y Mas are positioned strategically, leveraging their product offerings and cultural relevance to gain a foothold in the multicultural and ethnic food retail sector.
