Curbing the Power Struggle: Chairperson of Epe Local Government Halts Installation of New Olu of Epe

Discord in Epe as Council Chair Holds Off Inauguration of New Traditional Ruler of Epe

In an unusual move aimed at maintaining peace and order within Epe Local Government Area in Lagos State, the chairperson, Surah Animashaun, has suspended the installation of the new Olu of Epe, due to a contentious power struggle emerging after the death of the previous Olu, Oba Shefiu Adewale.

Two prominent chiefs, Chief Adeniyi Kadri Odedeogboro and Chief Iskilu Olajide Ikuforiji, have boldly claimed the revered stool as their own successor. According to Animashaun, the parallel coronations are considered "legally null and void."

In a bold statement, Animashaun expressed her concerns, stating:

In an effort to prevent possible outbreaks of violence among the loyalists of the competing claimants, Animashaun has also cancelled all Eid-al-Kabir (Ileya) celebrations and Jumat prayers at the council's central mosque and Eid ground in Oke Balogun.

The late Oba Shefiu Adewale, who earned a profound respect in the Epe community, had served as Otun-Balogun, the third-highest chieftaincy title, before ascending the throne.
