Discontented demonstrations over budget cuts in France
The streets of France are once again filled with demonstrators, as protests against austerity measures continue to unfold. The protests, initially called by a broad coalition of trade unions, including the CGT, Sud Rail, CGT Cheminots, Sud-Solidaires, SUD Éducation, CGT Éduc'action, and Solidaires Fonction publique, among others, started on September 10, 2025.
The ongoing protests are putting pressure on France's new prime minister, Sébastien Lecornu, who is currently working on a new austerity budget. Despite initial plans to cancel public holidays, Lecornu announced that this plan will not be implemented.
The protests, which are ongoing, were expected to see approximately 700,000 to 800,000 people participating throughout the day. In Paris alone, eleven individuals were arrested during the demonstrations. Nationwide, there are expected to be around 250 gatherings.
Blockades were attempted in front of high schools, at bus depots, and on traffic axes, with interventions made by France's interior minister to disperse them in the morning. The protests are against austerity measures announced by the previous government, with the unions describing them as brutal.
The proposal to cancel two public holidays was particularly criticized, with the unions arguing that such a move would further strain the already stretched workforce. The austerity budget is another point of contention for the unions, who are concerned about the impact it will have on their members and the general public.
Despite the protests being less intense than expected, the ongoing demonstrations serve as a reminder of the deep-seated opposition to austerity measures in France. The government will need to find a way to address these concerns if it hopes to move forward with its plans.
