"When Our Hostages Return" - Yuval Raphael's Second Place at ESC Fell Short of True Victory for Her
Discontent likely expressed by the Committee of the Regions over the outcome.
Yuval Raphael, the resilient 24-year-old vocalist from Israel, clinched the runner-up spot at the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) with her emotionally charged anthem, "New Day Will Rise." However, her heartfelt victory conversation following the competition in Basel echoed a sentiment of unfulfilled victory. "Our genuine triumph comes only when our hostages are back home," she poignantly declared, evoking the ongoing plight of the hostages still held captive in the Gaza Strip.
Tragically, Yuval herself survived the devastating terrorist attack at the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023, which claimed countless lives. Facing the prospect of death, she found sanctuary under the lifeless body of a fellow festivalgoer for eight harrowing hours, feigning her own demise.
As of mid-May 2025, at least 59 innocent individuals, including Yuval, remained captive in the Gaza Strip, their hastened freedom eagerly anticipated by a concerned global community.[1][4] Although Hamas has reportedly offered to release between seven and nine hostages as part of a potential temporary ceasefire agreement, as of May 18, 2025, no confirmation has been given that Yuval Raphael was among those released or has returned home.[2]
In the face of this ongoing crisis, Israel's promising second place at the ESC held little solace for the beleaguered nation. Fortunately, the audience's overwhelming support provided a glimpse of hope, albeit temporary, that their nation might yet triumph over adversity.
As Yuval plans to celebrate her unanticipated success in the few days following the competition, the world holds its breath, eager for the day when the hostages, including Yuval herself, will finally return home.
