The vibe at the iconic Santo Domingo nightclub "Jet Set" turned chaotic when its roof suddenly caved in during a Merengue performance. The catastrophe claimed the life of the 69-year-old headliner, Rubby Pérez, and several others. "I thought it was an earthquake," explained Rubby's dismayed manager, Enrique Paulino. "One of our saxophonists is dead. We rushed to find Rubby, but the debris was suffocating," he added.

At the time of the disaster, the authorities kept the crowd count under wraps. However, media reports suggest a minimum of 500 guests at the venue.

When queried about the casualties, emergency services chief Méndez could only estimate that ambulances had made around 134 trips to the hospital. He projects a total of 150 to 160 injuries. Yet, many partygoers miraculously managed to escape the carnage.

Panicking relatives flooded nearby hospitals in search of their loved ones. "We're losing faith," wailed Regina del Rosa, whose sister was at the nightclub, to the Dominican TV station SIN. "They're keeping mum about the details," she lamented.

To dig out the survivors, Méndez mobilized approximately 400 workers. From the rubble, pleas for help echoed. As long as there's a glimmer of hope, every effort will be made "to rescue or save these people," asserted Méndez.

A massive crane was employed in the rescue efforts, as per Dominican media images. Meanwhile, President Luis Abinader visited the scene, expressing concerns over the death toll, which includes the governor of Monte Cristi province, Nelsy Cruz, who reportedly succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.

The Dominican Republic, known for its pristine beaches and party scene[3], welcomes millions of tourists each year, many of whom are from Germany[4]. In 2024 alone, more than 11 million visitors flocked to the country.
