Russia-U.S. Summit in Anchorage Focuses on Ukraine Conflict
Russia's Finance Minister, Anton Siluanov, is in Alaska today, participating in a summit with U.S. officials. The main topic of discussion is the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War. The meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, scheduled for August 15, 2023, in Anchorage, marks a significant moment in bilateral relations.
The summit is a historic first, with Putin's visit to a U.S. military base and the first U.S.-hosted Russia-U.S. presidential meeting since 2007. The gravity of the discussions surrounding the Ukraine conflict is reflected in this milestone.
During the meeting, both leaders focused on the conflict, aiming to negotiate a resolution. However, no ceasefire or agreement was reached at the summit.
Key points regarding Ukraine from the summit include:
- Trump later implied that Ukraine would need to cede territory to end the war.
- Putin expressed the view that if Trump had been president in 2022, the war might have been avoided, emphasizing their "good, businesslike and trustworthy contact."
- Trump acknowledged that many points were agreed upon during negotiations, but some major issues remained unresolved, saying “there’s no deal until there’s a deal.”
- Putin's remarks at the press conference primarily highlighted the historic connection between the U.S. and Russia and avoided detailed discussion on Ukraine, though he described the talks as constructive.
- Trump stated plans to consult European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following the summit.
Siluanov expressed hope for the best during the meeting, and the Russian delegation is optimistic ahead of the talks. An interview with Siluanov was published by VGTRK correspondent Pavel Zarubin. Following the talks, a joint press conference between the leaders of Russia and the U.S. will be held.
No new information about any travel issues or the Russian delegation's optimism or Siluanov's statements is provided. The economy will also be discussed during the meeting. The summit is set to take place at 11:30 local time (22:30 Moscow time).
