Nigeria's Governors Extend Condolences Over Mokwa Flood Disaster

Heartfelt condolences have been extended by the Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF) to the administration of Niger State, following a devastating flood that struck Mokwa Local Government Area, resulting in a significant loss of life and property.

In a statement on Friday, the NGF Chairman, AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq, conveyed the forum's deep shock over the flood's severity. The statement expressed sympathy for the state government and the residents of Niger, pledging their unwavering support in the aftermath of the disaster.

Reports indicate that at least 21 lives were claimed by the floods that ravaged Mokwa. Additionally, property worth millions of Naira was destroyed.

Kwara State's Governor wrote, "The Nigeria Governors' Forum stands with the government and people of Niger State, as they grapple with the destructive flood that has wrought havoc in Mokwa town." He further lamented the magnitude of the flooding, expressing condolences to families who have lost loved ones and properties.

The governor also praised the Niger State government's coordination with emergency responders in supporting the victims of the disaster. He emphasized the need for continued collaboration to address the challenges posed by climate change and to strengthen mitigation efforts and relief institutions.

In light of the flood, he prayed for solace for families who have been affected and encouraged citizens to support the government's efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change and work with relevant agencies to assist those in urgent need.

According to reports, the disaster affected over 3,000 people, displacing them from their homes and causing widespread damage. The federal government, under President Bola Tinubu, activated the national emergency response center to aid the affected areas, while the Niger State government took immediate action to address the crisis.

  2. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Scientific Research Council has allocated funds for a study on the impact of climate change on the incidence of flooding in Nigeria, particularly in areas like Mokwa.
  3. In a statement on the environmental-science implications of the disaster, the Nigerian Environmental Protection Agency expressed concern over the destruction of the local ecosystem and the potential long-term effects on the climate-change situation in Naija.
  4. As the political discourse has escalated concerning the responsibility for the flood disaster, both the local and federal governments are under pressure to prove their preparedness for such crises and improve their infrastructural investments in environmental-science and general-news media coverage.
  5. Despite the overwhelming disaster in Mokwa, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and charities, such as the Red Cross, are encouraging citizens to donate Naira to assist in the relief efforts, aiming to provide immediate assistance and long-term support to the victims and the local community.
