Disappointment for David Luiz as he is forced to exit the Champions League match prematurely, only 32 minutes into his comeback, having previously played for Chelsea and Arsenal.
David Luiz Returns to Champions League but Injury Cuts Short Debut for Pafos
Brazilian footballer David Luiz made a surprising return to the Champions League on Wednesday, but his debut for Champions League debutants Pafos was cut short due to an injury.
Pafos kicked off their league phase away to Olympiacos, and Luiz was part of the starting XI. The defender, who previously played for Arsenal and won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012, has made 54 appearances in the competition in his career, playing for Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and now Pafos.
However, Luiz's appearance was met with surprise from some football fans, as it was his first appearance in the competition since his second stint at Stamford Bridge. After leaving the field due to his injury, he appeared visibly dejected.
The 34-year-old suffered a muscle injury during the match, and news of his injury spread quickly on social media. Prior to his injury, Luiz tried to play through the pain, but he was forced to leave the field in the 32nd minute.
Some football fans were amazed to learn that Luiz was still playing in the Champions League, as he last played in the competition group stage during the 2019/2020 season with Arsenal. David Luiz has scored seven goals and provided one assist in his Champions League career.
Chelsea fans may remember Luiz's last Champions League appearance for the club, as he played in their 4-0 victory over Qarabag in November 2017. Despite his injury, Luiz will be hoping to return to action soon and continue his career in the Champions League with Pafos.
