A spiteful draw against Switzerland did little to appease Germany's handball team following their lackluster performance. With a final score of 32:32, head coach Alfred Gislason and his squad can now rest easy, having secured their spot in the group's top position.
"A point to be proud of. We're through, but it's a wake-up call for sure,” sports director Ingo Meckes remarked after the match. “Giving away so many chances and still winning? Pure luck. But we'll take it and focus on our next match.”
A last-second equalizer
Spirits were low amongst the team after a chaotic first half that nearly cost them the game. Germany found themselves four goals behind with just ten minutes remaining, before a dramatic finish earned them a share of the spoils. The decisive goal came from a penalty taken by Juri Knorr in the final second.
Knorr (6 goals), Luca Witzke (5), and Mathis Häsler (debutant, 4 goals) were Germany's standout performers in front of 8,354 spectators at the Hallenstadion in Zurich.
Top spot up for grabs on Sunday
Germany now leads the group with 8:2 points, followed closely by Switzerland and Austria (6:4). The EM qualifiers will conclude on Sunday, May 15th, against Turkey in Stuttgart (6:00 PM/Sportschau.de and Dyn). With their ticket to the European Championship already secured, the German team is battling for the crucial top spot.
The draw for the final round is scheduled for next week on May 15th in Herning, Denmark.
Poor start, breakthrough in the second half
"We have to give everything to win this game. We can't afford to slip up if we want to maintain our first place," Gislason stated before the game. Despite this, Germany's sluggish start left many fans questioning their readiness. Mistakes, missed opportunities, and a struggling offense plagued the team for much of the game.
In the opening minutes, Marko Grgic and Tim Freihöfer missed two seventy-meter penalties, giving Switzerland an early 5:1 advantage after ten minutes. An early timeout called by Gislason and a switch in the entire backcourt failed to turn things around. Miro Schluroff, Knorr, and Julian Köster narrowed the gap to 4:5 (15.), but a string of saves from Switzerland's goalkeeper Nikola Portner kept the hosts in the lead.
When Germany conceded two goals during a power play to make it 8:13 (26.), the outlook was bleak for the Gislason squad. However, a resilient second half saw the team slowly claw their way back, with Knorr ultimately scoring the decisive equalizer from a penalty in the final second.
