Disappointed with Russia and Ukraine: Trump's Statement

The Ukrainian battlefield has witnessed a relentless escalation for over three years, and Trump's attempts to brokер a ceasefire seem futile. Both Russia and Ukraine face President Trump's growing dissatisfaction.

Trump's frustration is evident as he voiced his disappointment with both Moscow and Kiev. He believes a deal between the two nations could have been realistic. Every week, the Ukraine conflict tragically claims around 6,000 lives, including numerous innocent civilians taken out by rocket attacks.

Russia ignited its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, despite extensive efforts by President Trump to achieve a ceasefire. In the latest rounds of discussions in Istanbul, the sole agreement reached after intense negotiations was regarding the exchange of prisoners.

Recent developments indicate that the talks, initially held in Istanbul, might shift to Moscow. This development follows four phone calls between Trump and Putin. Despite these conversations, it appears little progress has been made towards a peaceful resolution.

Last month, Trump urged Ukraine to accept Russia's offer to discuss the potential end of the conflict. He wrote on his Truth Social platform on May 11, 2025, “Russia's President Putin wants a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine, but wants to meet in Turkey on Thursday to negotiate a possible end to the bloodshed.” Trump emphasized the urgency by adding, “Ukraine should agree immediately."

The Naysayers

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte criticized Russia's approach to the peace efforts intensely. Rutte stated, "The Russians are now sending this historian to the talks in Istanbul twice, want to start with history from a thousand years ago, and then more or less say that Ukraine is to blame." He added, "That's not helpful. But at least we're trying to make progress step by step."

Russia was represented by President Vladimir Medinsky's advisor in the Istanbul talks. Medinsky, a former culture minister, has authored several historical books that critics deem revisionist.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky posits that Moscow's goal is merely to avoid harsher U.S. sanctions. According to Zelensky, "For them, it's important to show (President Donald) Trump that there is a diplomatic bridge between Ukraine and Russia."
