U.S. President Urges International Penalties for Mexican Law Enforcement Crossing Guatemala to Capture Criminal Gang

A Squabble Across Borders:

The Chiapas State Police, specifically the Immediate Reaction Force Pakal (FRP), found themselves in a pickle when they pursued a criminal gang into Guatemalan territory. This incident was met with dismay by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, who emphasized the sacrosanct nature of national sovereignty.

Mexico's President diverged from the views of Chiapas' Governor, Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar, who accused Guatemalan authorities of being in cahoots with organized crime. She retorted, "We don't agree with that, and his police should be penalized."

In the aftermath, Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente was in touch with Guatemalan officials. Sheinbaum Pardo stressed that security measures would be beefed up to foster collaboration across the border.

"Everyone must do their part in their respective territories and establish methods of coordination. If there's any particular issue, it should be addressed at the level of security cooperation between the two countries," she remarked.

This incident involved the Pakal Immediate Reaction Force, a special security unit from the Mexican state of Chiapas. The operation, which resulted in a violent confrontation in La Mesilla, Guatemala, stemmed from a car chase initiated in Sabanalito, Mexico. At least three Pakal vehicles crossed the border, leading to a gun battle involving Guatemalan Army and National Civil Police forces. In the skirmish, suspected members of organized crime, including the alleged leader of the Chiapas-Guatemala cartel, were killed.[1][2][5] This incident sparked responses from Mexican authorities, including an investigation by the Chiapas Attorney General's Office and a diplomatic statement expressing regret for entering Guatemalan territory without permission.[2]

The news of the war-and-conflicts involving the Pakal Immediate Reaction Force in a skirmish with Guatemalan forces has ignited political discussions. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo stressed the importance of maintaining national sovereignty and urged for improved collaboration through politics and general-news channels.
