In the world of thrilling adaptations, a new chapter is about to unfold. The sequel to the 2011 US remake of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," titled "The Girl in the Spider's Web," has been fast-tracked for production next year.

Fede Alvarez, known for his work on this year's chiller hit "Don't Breathe," has been tapped to direct the sequel. The story, based on the book of the same name by journalist David Lagercrantz, is a follow-up to the late author Stieg Larsson's "Millennium" trilogy.

The original stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are not returning for this sequel. Sony Pictures has recast the roles for the new adaptation directed by Alvarez. Claire Foy, best known for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in the Netflix series "The Crown," will take on the role of Lisbeth Salander. Sylvia Hoeks will play Lisbeth's twin sister, while Claes Bang has been cast as the villain.

The original Swedish version of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," released in 2009, starred Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist. The US remake, also released in 2011, did not confirm the return of Rooney Mara or Daniel Craig for the sequel.

In an interview with Screen Daily in September, Rooney Mara expressed being still open to returning for the sequel but not holding out hope anymore.

"The Girl in the Spider's Web" is not the first time the story has been adapted for the big screen. The first book in the original trilogy, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," has been adapted twice, with the first adaptation released in 2009 (Swedish version) and the second in 2011 (US remake).

The production of "The Girl in the Spider's Web" is being handled by Sony, and more cast members are expected to be announced in due course. The book, a 2015 bestseller, promises a gripping continuation of the complex lives and investigations of computer hacker Lisbeth Salander and crusading journalist Mikael Blomkvist.

As we eagerly await the release of "The Girl in the Spider's Web," let's remember that the original trilogy's author, Stieg Larsson, passed away in 2004 and never saw his work become the global phenomenon it is today.

The upcoming movie "The Girl in the Spider's Web" falls under the category of movies-and-tv, providing entertainment that continues the complex investigations of Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist. In the world of film adaptations, this sequel has been fast-tracked for production, directed by Fede Alvarez, known for his work in the entertainment industry.
