In an interview on The Town podcast, Denis Villeneuve, the acclaimed director of Dune, shared his thoughts on the Star Wars franchise. Contrary to popular belief, there is no publicly available information regarding specific reasons for his resistance to working on a Star Wars film, or his reported embarrassment over the Ewoks from 'Return of the Jedi.'

Villeneuve has made it clear that he has no interest in working on a Star Wars film. His aversion might be influenced by his feelings about 'Return of the Jedi,' as he was traumatized by the movie when he was 15 years old. The lighter tones in the film did not spark his interest in the franchise.

Villeneuve perceives Star Wars as derailing after 'Return of the Jedi.' He believes that the franchise has become crystallized and dogmatic, feeling like a version with no more surprises. He thinks there is less room for experimentation in Star Wars compared to other projects like Dune.

Star Wars' future commitments are largely shaped by a focus on familiarity. With few notable exceptions, the franchise has turned to less challenging ideas and more inwardly to familiarity in its recent projects. This shift might be the reason behind Villeneuve's aversion.

Despite his aversion, Villeneuve adores the Star Wars franchise. He and his best friend wanted to talk to George Lucas after seeing 'Return of the Jedi.' It's worth noting that Villeneuve's next Dune movie may not feature diminutively fuzzy freedom fighters, a reference to the Ewoks, suggesting he might be steering clear of the elements that initially caused his discomfort.

Villeneuve's aversion to Star Wars began with the release of 'Return of the Jedi.' His thoughts about the franchise, however, were recently expressed in a candid conversation on The Town podcast, offering insights into his perspective on the beloved series.
