'Director David Zucker of 'Naked Gun' fame attributes his unique sense of humor to his childhood in Milwaukee'
David Zucker, Comedy Legend from Milwaukee, Continues to Shine
David Zucker, one of the most influential voices in comedy, hails from the Milwaukee area. Known for his work on iconic films such as "Airplane!" and the "Scary Movie" series, Zucker continues to make his mark in the entertainment industry.
Zucker's directorial debut was not without its challenges. Making the movie was a struggle for him and his team, as they were venturing into uncharted territory. However, their efforts paid off, and Zucker went on to direct "Scary Movie 3" and "Scary Movie 4."
Zucker has a deep affection for his hometown and still visits Milwaukee regularly. His younger daughter recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin, and his son attended there before. In fact, you can find his name among the plaques at Solly's hamburger place in Port Washington, alongside other famous people from Milwaukee.
Zucker has complimented director Akiva Schaffer as "a very nice and very talented director." He has also expressed support for the Wayans Brothers relaunching the "Scary Movie" spoof movies starring Anna Farris and Regina Hall.
Zucker's unique style of comedy is known as spoof, a very specific type of comedy that requires jokes to come from behind the camera. He and his team, often referred to as ZAZ (an acronym for Zucker, his brother Jerry, and the late Jim Abrahams), were noted in the earliest reviews of their work. Zucker has even gone on to teach a course called "Mastercrash," providing detailed lessons on how to master the kind of spoofing he and his cohorts became famous for.
One of Zucker's most memorable works is "Airplane!," which celebrates its 45th anniversary this year. The film remains one of the most quoted, beloved, and influential comedies to date. Leslie Nielsen, who delivered the classic line "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley" in "Airplane!," was a key collaborator of Zucker's, and they worked together on "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun."
However, Zucker has not seen the rebooted version of "The Naked Gun," starring Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson, and has no interest in doing so. He did not express enthusiasm for the reboot, preferring to focus on his current project, titled "The Star of Malta," a 1940s style film noir, action movie, rom com.
Zucker's strong ties with his high school friends in Milwaukee and Madison remain, and he continues to draw inspiration from his roots in the Midwest. His work, filled with self-deprecating humour, is a testament to his upbringing in Milwaukee, where he and his team made fun of themselves in their work.
In a career spanning over four decades, David Zucker has proven himself to be a master of comedy. His unique style, combined with his deep connection to his hometown, makes him one of the most beloved figures in the industry. As he continues to work on new projects, we can expect more laughs and memorable moments from this comedy legend.
