Director Dan Trachtenberg Discusses Predator: Badlands' Extraterrestrial Protagonist and Its Imagined Setting

Here's a fresh take on the Predator: Badlands article:

Peek at Predator: Badlands - A Riveting Twist in the Predator Saga

Straight up, we got a sneak peek at the upcoming sci-fi action thriller, Predator: Badlands. Buckle up, because this time around, the notorious Predator takes center stage, hunts on an alien planet, and faces off against some fierce opponents.

Chatting with BloodyDisgusting, director/co-writer Dan Trachtenberg shed some light on the film's juicy details. The protagonist, a young Predator named Dek (played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), is an outcast from his clan on Yautja Prime. Dek embarks on a dangerous quest to find the ultimate enemy on the hauntingly labeled "Death Planet" of Kalisk, hoping to establish his worth.

Evoking a similar vibe to Prey, Trachtenberg aims to take Dek and his people seriously, treating the Yautja language with respect, similar to how the Elvish language was treated in Lord of the Rings or the Dothraki language in Game of Thrones. He steered clear of creating something overly lore-focused, ensuring the story remains the focal point.

Thia, an android created by Weyland-Yutani, plays a pivotal role in Dek's journey. Much like Dek, Thia journeys to prove herself, taking a different path. Trachtenberg cited influences such as Frank Frazetta, Mad Max 2, and Shadow of the Colossus for the film's feel.

Trachtenberg believes that a whole movie about a Predator and an android is a "big, crazy swing" that audiences could emotionally connect with. Catch Predator: Badlands in theaters on November 7. For those craving traditional Predator tales, the previous five films are there to satiate your appetite.
