Director Álex de la Iglesia expresses gratitude and pride in remastering 'La Comunidad' for its 25th anniversary celebrations.

In 1999, Spanish director Álex de la Iglesia released "La Comunidad," a film that has since become one of the great classics of Spanish cinema. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, a new 4K master restored version of the film is being re-released in theaters.

"La Comunidad" tells the story of Julia, a woman who works for a real estate agency and discovers hidden money among the trash in an apartment she is showing. The film, which was Álex de la Iglesia's fifth, was made with producer Andrés Vicente Gómez.

De la Iglesia, known for his unique approach to storytelling, treats serious problems, such as lack of communication between people, in a humorous way. This was particularly evident in "La Comunidad," where he managed to weave humor into a thrilling narrative.

De la Iglesia learned a lot during the filming of "La Comunidad," particularly in managing a large ensemble cast, including 15 actors. He credits Sancho Gracia, a significant person in his life, for helping to alleviate fear among the crew by taking risks, such as walking along the railing on a rooftop scene.

One of the standout performances in "La Comunidad" was that of Carmen Maura, who won the Silver Shell for Best Actress at the San Sebastián Film Festival for her role. Maura's performance was so impressive that she was nominated for 15 Goya Awards for her role in the film, winning three, including Best Actress.

Maura's success in "La Comunidad" has not gone unnoticed, as she is now working with De la Iglesia again on a new film. De la Iglesia and Maura's collaboration has proven to be fruitful, as their work together on "The Caregiver," a Netflix production, has resulted in a thrilling film about the relationship between a mother and a daughter.

De la Iglesia, who does not watch his own movies or series, finds it frightening to see virtues and flaws. However, he believes that learning more from a bad movie than from a good one is essential for growth as a filmmaker. This philosophy is evident in his work, as he continues to push boundaries and challenge audiences with his unique and thought-provoking films.

"The Caregiver" is not the only film that De la Iglesia enjoys filming. He particularly enjoys working with his long-time collaborators and the actors in "The Caregiver." De la Iglesia learned to shoot ensemble sequences and move in a space to avoid a theatrical feel in "La Comunidad," a skill that has served him well in his subsequent films.

"La Comunidad" was the most successful Spanish film of the year 2000, with over one and a half million spectators. Its success is a testament to De la Iglesia's unique approach to storytelling and his ability to connect with audiences. As "La Comunidad" returns to theaters for its 25th anniversary, it is clear that De la Iglesia's work continues to resonate with audiences, and his influence on Spanish cinema is undeniable.
