Heads of Municipal Formations in Yakutia Demand Direct Elections: Opinions from Zabaykalsky Krai

Let's delve into the opinions of some influential figures in Yakutia regarding the push for direct elections of municipal heads.

Our correspondent gathered the thoughts of State Duma Deputy from Zabaykalsky Krai Yuri Grigoryev, Deputy of the Zabaykalsky Krai Legislative Assembly and First Secretary of the regional Communist Party branch Yuri Gaiduk, and LDPR faction leader in the Zaksobr Georgy Shilin.

State Duma Deputy Yuri Grigoryev, an advocate for direct mayoral elections, mentioned that the "Fair Russia - Patriots - For Truth" party recently introduced a bill with the aim of restoring direct elections. He explained, "Direct elections are necessary because people should elect the one who leads. The current law limits this opportunity, especially during the first elections. Our bill insists on direct elections, which is essential for the elected head to have all the necessary powers."

In contrast, Yuri Gaiduk from the Communist Party, expressed his aversion to the abolition of direct elections. He stated, "I'm completely against the abolition of direct elections. When deciding on a city's mayor, our faction opposed it because the power will push through whoever they want through such elections. The power is afraid of the people's opinion and doesn't understand it."

LDPR faction leader in the Zaksobr Georgy Shilin asserted that his party continues to support direct elections. He stated, "Direct elections are necessary so the people can express their opinion about a particular individual vying for a high position. When elected, they have responsibility towards each person who voted for them. Thus, we believe that significant positions should still be elected by direct vote."

Recently, public figure Marina Savvateeva from the "Civil Solidarity" movement expressed that only residents of Chita should elect their city's leader. Additionally, a significant portion of our website visitors believe that direct mayoral elections should be reinstated in Chita.

Local representative Alexander Shebénykov proposed a project to restore direct mayoral elections, possibly allowing residents to elect the city's head as early as next year. However, opposing views led to no decision being made.

In Russia, the upcoming 2025 elections will include gubernatorial, regional parliamentary, and municipal elections, with significant changes to the electoral law. The current status of municipal elections in Chita, however, remains unclear and would depend on local electoral laws and practices.
