Get ready, Kyiv! Chancellor Friedrich Merz is rolling into town with some major European muscle. Joining forces with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Opposition Leader Keir Starmer, Merz is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and other leaders in a powerful display of solidarity against Russia's relentless attack on Ukraine.
Their joint mission: Achieving a 30-day ceasefire to help initiate peace talks. And they've got US President Donald Trump on their side!
Traveling by train, these global powerhouses have released a joint statement, lending their collective might to Trump's call for a comprehensive, unconditional ceasefire. The nor'easter of diplomacy seeks to create a "space for talks about a just and lasting peace."
A United Front, at Least on this Point
This marks the first time since Trump took office that the US and Europe have joined forces in such a significant way to address the ongoing war in Ukraine. In recent months, Trump had attempted to resolve the issue unilaterally, without success and much resistance from Europe. The Old World warned against dictating peace terms to Ukraine.
In their statement, the Euro-Steel coalition stands firm on their unwillingness to concede territory to Russia. "Russia must pull the plug on its illegal military aggression, giving Ukraine the chance to grow as a sovereign nation within its internationally recognized borders, for future generations to come."
Hard-Hitting Aid and Harsh Words
Merz, Macron, Starmer, Tusk, and their team pledge further military aid to help Ukraine resist the "ongoing barbaric and violations-of-international-law invasion" by Russia. "We will beef up our support for Ukraine. As long as Russia continues its refusal to agree to a lasting ceasefire, we'll up the ante on pressuring its war machine."
But Merz doesn't shy away from throwing shade at the Kremlin's big cheese, Vladimir Putin. During a recent phone call with Trump, Merz spoke tough on potential new sanctions if Russia doesn't play ball. When Trump paraded this newfound hardline stance on his infamous Truth Social platform, Merz doubled down in Brussels. "The ball's in Moscow's court now, buddy. No one else," he barked. As for the timeline, Merz is optimistic: "I've got a feeling that we'll see an agreement for a ceasefire in Ukraine by the weekend."
