Diplomats from the European Union's Environment Ministry convene to finalize promises prior to the UN's Climate Summit. - Diplomats from the European Union discussed and finalized arrangements for the upcoming United Nations climate summit regarding environmental matters.
The European Union (EU) is participating in the United Nations Climate Conference, where the negotiation of pledges for greenhouse gas emission reduction by participating countries is taking place. The UN Climate Conference, hosted by the United Nations, serves as a venue for countries to discuss and commit to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.
The EU has proposed a range for its greenhouse gas emission reduction, aiming for a collective reduction of between 66.25 and 72.5 percent compared to 1990 levels. This proposed range is based on already adopted laws within the EU.
However, the EU has not made any new pledges for greenhouse gas emission reduction at the current time. A decision on a specific figure for emission reduction by 2035 has been postponed.
The proposed emission reduction figures will be discussed in detail at the UN Climate Conference in Brussels on Thursday. The EU's pledge for greenhouse gas emission reduction will also be a topic of discussion at the conference.
The EU's aim for a collective reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared to 1990 levels by 2040 includes specific targets for the transport sector. The EU aims for near-elimination of CO2 emissions from new cars by 2035, effectively requiring zero-emission vehicles in the fleet by that year.
Other participating countries in the UN Climate Conference include Brazil. The United Nations has demanded that all participants commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2035.
On February 27, 2023, all EU member countries were represented in Brussels for the UN Climate Conference. These include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden.
The EU's participation in the UN Climate Conference and the discussion of its greenhouse gas emission reduction pledge will be important steps towards global efforts to combat climate change.
