Diplomats from China, Cambodia, and Thailand meet for a tea event in Southwest China
Chinese Foreign Minister Hosts Tea Gathering to Foster Peace and Cooperation
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi hosted a tea gathering on August 14, 2025, in Anning, southwest China's Yunnan Province. The event, described as a sharing event, aimed to facilitate friendly and candid communication with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa regarding the border conflicts between Cambodia and Thailand.
The gathering took place in a harmonious atmosphere, symbolizing China's commitment to supporting a peaceful resolution and cooperation among its neighboring countries. The attendees included high-ranking officials from China, Cambodia, and Thailand, making the event a formal affair.
The key discussion points revolved around the desire of both Cambodia and Thailand to end the border conflict and resume dialogue to improve bilateral relations. The upcoming Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Anning was seen as a conducive opportunity for pursuing peace and cooperation.
China expressed its support for Cambodia and Thailand to fully implement the consensus reached at the extraordinary General Border Committee meeting, consolidate the ceasefire situation, reopen border crossings, and engage ASEAN's role in resolving disputes "in the ASEAN way." China also expressed its readiness to assist with clearing mines and other activities in the border areas, reflecting its desire to restore peace and develop cooperation.
Both sides exchanged views on other regional issues such as the South China Sea, indicating a broader diplomatic dialogue was part of the meeting. The significance of "Anning" as a symbol of peace, harmony, and amity, with hopes that Cambodia and Thailand jointly speak out for peace while there, was also highlighted.
Xinhua/Gao Yongwei was the photographer for the event. No specific venue for the gathering was mentioned, but the location was in Anning, southwest China's Yunnan Province.
