Diplomatic ties resume: Iran and Sudan Restoring Diplomatic Connections
Iran and Sudan have resumed diplomatic relations after a seven-year hiatus, marking a significant development in regional politics. The resumption of ties was first announced in October 2023, and diplomatic work between the two countries is expected to pick up as early as September 2025.
The meeting between the foreign ministers of Iran and Sudan took place on the sidelines of the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement in Uganda. During the meeting, the Iranian First Vice President, Mohammad Mokhber, and Sudanese Foreign Minister-designate Ali Al-Sadiq discussed strategies for revitalizing bilateral ties between their nations.
The resumption of full diplomatic representation between Iran and Sudan is part of a broader effort to stabilize and improve diplomatic ties in the Middle East and North Africa region. The focus of these discussions includes strengthening mutual cooperation with neighboring and regional states, such as Egypt and Jordan, and prioritizing regional stability, addressing threats from Israel, and fostering development and progress through diplomatic channels.
For Sudan, regional powers including Qatar and the UK have emphasized addressing Sudan's domestic polarization and complex regional conflicts, including power-sharing and peace agreements, which are important background points likely influencing Iran-Sudan discussions.
Iran and Sudan share common stances in support of Palestine. Iran's First Vice President, Mohammad Mokhber, called for intensified efforts by Muslim nations to force the Zionist regime to stop its crimes against Gaza. Sudan's Foreign Minister, Ali Sadeq, also linked recent events in Sudan to Israel's interference and collusion with regional allies.
Sudan's refusal to normalize relations with Israel is a factor in the unrest in the country, according to Ali Sadeq. The Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, and Sudan's acting Foreign Minister, Ali Sadeq, met in Baku on January 21st, 2024, where they expressed dissatisfaction with the severance of diplomatic ties between the two countries in 2016 under foreign pressures.
This resumption of diplomatic ties between Iran and Sudan underscores a shared commitment to regional cooperation and stability, as well as a shared stance in support of Palestine. However, specific details about the agenda or outcomes of Iran-Sudan meetings remain unclear.
