Diplomatic talks offer promise for resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, according to the Pope
Pope Leo XIV, the current head of the Vatican, has been a steadfast advocate for peace in Ukraine, urging for a ceasefire, negotiations, prayer, and fasting. In his efforts to promote diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict, he has called on both sides, including Russia as the aggressor, to halt hostilities and engage in dialogue.
On August 22, 2025, Pope Leo XIV designated a day of prayer and fasting specifically for peace in Ukraine and the Holy Land, encouraging Catholics worldwide to seek justice and an end to armed conflict. He has expressed cautious hope about ongoing diplomatic initiatives but stressed that much effort remains to find a peaceful way forward.
These peace efforts by Pope Leo XIV align with high-level political efforts to end the conflict, particularly the summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which took place last Friday in Alaska. However, no results were achieved regarding a possible ceasefire.
Pope Leo’s diplomatic appeal complements these initiatives by promoting "soft diplomacy," dialogue, and nonviolence. Yet, his earlier remarks urging Ukraine to show “the courage of the white flag” and negotiate were met with criticism by Ukrainian officials and European leaders, who feared it could be interpreted as urging Ukraine to surrender unilaterally. The Vatican clarified that the pope meant both sides should stop fighting and negotiate, placing responsibility first on the aggressor to cease fire.
Through his calls for peace, Pope Leo XIV continues to emphasize the need for a diplomatic resolution to the war and the importance of dialogue over violence. His efforts, along with ongoing political negotiations, offer a glimmer of hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
