Diplomatic shift in Ukraine suggests readiness for territorial compromises

As the highly-anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin approaches, a significant point of contention has emerged: the potential return of Ukrainian territories.

In the lead-up to the summit, several leading European politicians are scheduled to meet with Trump before his negotiations with Putin. The aim is to discuss various aspects of the Ukrainian conflict, with a focus on achieving a partial return of Ukrainian territories.

However, the current international stance, including the reactions from the US, Europe, NATO, and Ukraine, strongly rejects any potential territorial concessions by Ukraine in exchange for a ceasefire.

Ukraine is firm that it will not accept any deal involving territorial concessions to Russia under any circumstances. The country emphasizes the necessity of preserving its territorial integrity and rejecting unjust peace terms.

The United States, as clarified recently, will not support any agreements with Russia that involve Ukraine ceding territory. The US insists on security guarantees for Ukraine without forced territorial compromises.

European allies and NATO remain divided on the issue, but there is broad skepticism about the feasibility of peace settlements that require territorial concessions. They recognize that for any peace deal to last, some form of compromise may technically be needed, but the predominant position supports Ukraine's sovereign claim and is wary of Russia's uncompromising demands.

In contrast, Russia's position remains rigid: Russia continues to demand that Ukraine withdraw from large areas of territory, including Donbas and parts of other oblasts, as conditions for peace. Moscow shows no indication of softening its demands despite international opposition.

The UK and Canada support the need to achieve peace with Ukraine's mandatory involvement, stressing that any decisions on territorial issues must be coordinated with Kyiv. The Ukrainian side is ready to consider possible concessions only if there are reliable security guarantees and continued military support.

Many world leaders oppose changing international borders by force. The question of territorial concessions and a possible peace remains one of the most contentious issues ahead of the meeting of world leaders.

Moreover, Russia continues to deploy troops and is preparing for new offensives, making it premature to discuss a possible conflict resolution, according to Ukraine. This ongoing military activity further complicates the already delicate negotiations, underscoring the urgency for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
