Tensions between Israel and Germany escalate as Ambassador warns of cultural marginalization
Israel's Ambassador to Germany, Ron Prosor, expressed concerns over the growing marginalization of Israeli culture during a celebratory event marking 60 years of diplomatic relations in Potsdam. "We are acutely aware of who extends a hand and who turns away," Prosor stated. "What was once a bond that brought us together, a compass that gave us direction, now appears to be dangerously wavering."
Prosor urged the need to build bridges and return to an inclusive, open culture that invites questions, rather than imposes answers. "We find ourselves at a turning point," he said. "Culture, once a beacon of openness, is becoming a test due to increasing exclusion."
The event, hosted by Brandenburg's state government, took place onboard the Jewish theater ship MS Goldberg from Berlin, with Holocaust survivor George Shefi present as a guest of honor. Prosor avoided addressing Germany's criticisms regarding Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip.
Brandenburg's Minister-President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) emphasized the special responsibility of Germany due to its historical role during the Holocaust. "We bear responsibility for what happened more than 80 years ago," Woidke stated. "We as Brandenburgers have a particularly unique responsibility."
Recent decades have seen a positive relationship between Germany and Israel, despite the strains caused by the Holocaust. however, public opinion in Germany towards Israel has shifted negatively as reflected in a Bertelsmann Stiftung survey. Only 36% of Germans now view Israel positively, down from 46% in 2021. Meanwhile, 60% of Israelis hold a favorable view of Germany.
As the two countries continue to work towards remembrance, cooperation, and reconciliation, Israeli officials, such as Ambassador Prosor, are looking to address the growing criticisms and maintain the longstanding alliance.
