Chinese and Cambodian Foreign Ministers Review Decade of Cooperation at Lancang-Mekong Meeting
On August 14, 2025, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn met in Anning, Yunnan Province, China, to discuss the achievements and progress of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) over the past decade.
The meeting, part of the tenth LMC Foreign Ministers' Meeting, was attended by both ministers. The location of the meeting was in southwest China's Yunnan Province.
The LMC, established in 2010, includes China and the five Mekong countries: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. The meeting marked a significant milestone in reviewing the LMC's ten years of cooperation.
During the meeting, the ministers discussed various aspects of the LMC's development. They highlighted the successful establishment and growth of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Economic Development Belt, with trade between China and the five Mekong countries reaching 437 billion US dollars, an increase of 125%. Infrastructure connectivity was strengthened, industrial and supply chain cooperation deepened, and innovation corridors were emphasized as new development areas.
The ministers also recognised the LMC as a natural community with a shared future, emphasizing four guiding principles for future robust growth: upholding good-neighbourliness and friendship; focusing on development and pragmatic cooperation; ensuring benefits for the people with openness and inclusiveness; and pursuing innovation and pilot projects.
In addition, the ministers called for a summary of experience from the decade of cooperation and preparation for the upcoming Leaders’ Meeting to advance the mechanism to a new level. They also addressed regional and international challenges, including an exchange of views on the South China Sea issue.
An informal side meeting among the foreign ministers of China, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand was held to discuss regional security and combat cross-border crimes collaboratively. Specific bilateral dialogues, such as China’s meeting with Cambodia, emphasized cooperation in political stability, economic development, anti-crime efforts, and joint infrastructure projects like the Industrial Development Corridor and Fish and Rice Corridor.
Overall, the meeting marked a milestone review of the LMC's ten years of cooperation, focusing on deepening regional unity, stability, sustainable development, innovation-driven growth, and addressing shared challenges in a volatile international landscape.
