Resuming Diplomatic Ties: Canada and India Move Forward
Diplomatic row between Canada and India comes to an end, as ambassadors reappointed. - Diplomatic impasse between Canada and India concludes, as envoys are reinstated to their respective posts.
Peace on the horizon! After a long, intense diplomatic row, Canada and India have agreed to rebuild their relationship. Mark Carney, our Prime Minister, had a meeting with Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 summit in the breathtaking Canadian Rockies. He expressed optimism, confident that the chat would lay the groundwork for reestablishing ties based on mutual respect and reliance.
Modi echoed his sentiments, declaring both nations' commitment to democratic values and the importance of the India-Canada relationship. Interestingly, he stated that the bond between the two countries holds significance in multiple aspects.
The dispute between the two nations erupted in June 2023 following the murder of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. Nijjar, an advocate for an independent Sikh state in India, was found shot dead in a temple parking lot. Indian authorities had been seeking him for alleged terrorism and conspiracy.
In response, Canada expelled an Indian diplomat, citing allegations of a link between the diplomat and the assassination plot on Canadian soil. The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed there were "credible allegations" of involvement by the Indian intelligence service.
These claims ignited a heated diplomatic battle. India dismissed them as absurd and insisted on the absence of any violent incidents in Canada. In retaliation, they temporarily halted Canadian visa applications.
It's worth noting that Canada is home to the world's largest Sikh community outside of Punjab, a state in India that experienced a tumultuous independence movement in the 1980s and 1990s, resulting in thousands of deaths.
Now, though, the two countries seem to be moving past their differences. The common goal of collaborating in technology, digital transition, food security, critical minerals, economic growth, supply chains, and energy transformation may pave the way for a brighter future for our relationship with India.
