Diplomatic discussions could face complications due to Russia's rejection of the ceasefire, according to Zelenskyy ahead of his visit to the White House.

The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to intensify, with no concrete progress made in the peace talks. This week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to meet with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday, while leaders from France, Germany, and the UK are expected to co-chair a virtual meeting of the pro-Ukraine "Coalition of the Willing" on Sunday.

Recent developments in the peace talks reveal very limited progress, with no ceasefire agreed and continuing conflict, including increased violence and casualties. Following a US-Russia summit in Alaska on August 15, hopes for a diplomatic resolution remain low as fighting has intensified rather than eased.

Key points in the negotiations include Ukraine's demand for security guarantees and Russia's insistence on a dominant role in any settlement. The Ukrainian president has emphasized that a meeting with Vladimir Putin would require security guarantees for Ukraine to prevent further Russian attacks. However, Russia has insisted on veto power regarding Ukraine’s future security and demands a central role, effectively blocking progress toward a lasting settlement.

Despite these challenges, Zelenskyy has stated that he would continue "coordination with partners" ahead of Monday's meeting with Trump. The talks are expected to address security guarantees, territorial issues, and continued support for Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.

Meanwhile, Russian forces launched 60 drones and one missile into Ukraine overnight into Sunday, according to Ukraine's air force. At least 40 of the drones were shot down or suppressed by Ukraine, while 20 impacted across 12 locations in Ukraine. Russia's Defense Ministry claims it shot down at least 52 Ukrainian drones overnight.

Zelenskyy warned that Russian operations may expand as peace negotiations continue, and Kyiv maintains that no peace negotiations can take place until a ceasefire is in effect. The Ukrainian president has also ruled out giving up Donetsk, fearing it could provide a launchpad for future Russian offensives.

In a turn of events, the recent summit between Trump and Putin in Alaska ended with Russia demanding that Ukraine cede the entire Donetsk region in exchange for an end to the fighting. Kyiv has rejected ceding any territory to Russia without binding security guarantees that include the US.

As the conflict continues, civilian casualties in Ukraine have risen significantly. From December 2024 to May 2025, civilian casualties increased by 37%. Trump previously expressed a desire for a rapid ceasefire before the summit, but no such agreement has been reached.

Despite the ongoing violence, Trump has posted to social media claiming "big progress" being made regarding the peace talks and said "STAY TUNED!" The European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will accompany Zelenskyy in the upcoming meetings.

As the situation remains uncertain, both sides continue to call for diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the conflict. Zelenskyy stated that it is important that everyone agrees that a conversation at the leaders' level is necessary to clarify all the details and determine which steps are needed and will work.

  1. The international community's focus on Ukraine's political stance is heightened as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy meets with US President Donald Trump on Monday, discussing security guarantees, territorial issues, and continued support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.
  2. The ongoing war-and-conflicts between Ukraine and Russia have led to increased international attention and policy-and-legislation discussions, particularly regarding Ukraine's demand for security assurances and Russia's insistence on a dominant role in any settlement.
  3. General news outlets are closely monitoring the unfolding events, including the recent surge in war-related casualties and the intensifying tensions, hoping for diplomatic resolutions that may reduce the ongoing violence and bring about lasting peace.
