Foreign Minister Wadephul's Statement on U.S. Tariffs: A "Lose-Lose Game"

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul refrained from commenting on recent court rulings in the U.S., stating the nation adheres to its legal system and considers it independent, according to Bild.

On Wednesday, a U.S. trade court invalidated tariff increases imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The ruling declared Trump had overstepped his authority by invoking a 1977 emergency law. As of Thursday, an appeals court permitted the tariffs to persist during the appeal process.

The European Union (EU) had initially threatened 50 percent tariffs on U.S. products, set to commence on July 9. However, these tariffs have yet to be implemented, and negotiations with the EU remain ongoing.

Regarding recent U.S. accusations of Germany restricting freedom of speech, Wadephul told Bild, "That is far from the reality in Germany. We are a very free and open society where everything can be said." Concerning Chancellor Friedrich Merz's impending visit to the U.S., Wadephul suggested it would be unwarranted to respond to every criticism. Instead, Merz should maintain a focused agenda on domestic issues.

Background

Ensuing the Trump administration's announcement of a new deal with China on May 12, the U.S. agreed to suspend a 34 percent reciprocal tariff for 90 days, retaining a 10 percent tariff during that period. Both China and the U.S. will lower combined tariffs by 115 percent (possibly an error, referring to specific tariff lines or values), with each retaining an additional 10 percent tariff. China will remove retaliatory tariffs and non-tariff countermeasures declared since April 4, 2025, and the measures were set to take effect by May 14.

In the case of the EU, a 20 percent tariff was delayed until July 9, with additional duties ranging from 4.4 to 50 percent scheduled for July 14. A 25 percent ad valorem tariff on certain U.S.-origin goods is slated for December 1. Both sides are engaging in ongoing negotiations to avert escalation, with the U.S. not yet imposing new broad-based tariffs on the EU.

  1. Amid the ongoing trade dispute, the European Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, as part of the broader policy-and-legislation landscape in politics and general news.
  2. The recent U.S. trade court ruling that invalidated tariff increases but allowed them to persist during the appeal process adds another layer of complexity to this ongoing tariff standoff, further highlighting the importance of continued negotiations and policy developments, making it a significant topic within policy-and-legislation discussions in politics and general news.
