Foreign Minister Wadephul Urges Resolution in U.S.-EU Trade Dispute Ahead of Washington Visit

Germany's Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, has called for a resolution in the ongoing trade conflict between the U.S. and the EU before his upcoming visit to Washington. In a statement before his departure from Berlin, Wadephul advocated for the construction of "stables bridges of partnership and trust" instead of erecting new barriers.

He highlighted the significant investment Germany has made in the U.S., with around 6,000 German companies employing nearly a million Americans nationwide. Wadephul expressed support for the EU Commission in finding a balanced resolution to remove unnecessary trade barriers and promote fair trade between the two regions, maintaining prosperity and ensuring economic security.

During his talks in Washington, Wadephul is set to meet his counterpart, Marco Rubio, among others. In addition to discussing trade issues, the focus will also be on the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip. Wadephul emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and a sustainable peace, stressing the importance of pressuring Putin to engage in serious negotiations.

Regarding economic sanctions against Russia, Wadephul stated that Europeans will continue to tighten the screws, and the U.S. Congress is also ready for more sanctions. To date, U.S. President Donald Trump has resisted new sanctions against Russia.

The rising threat posed by Russia to euro-Atlantic security necessitates increased European defense investments. Wadephul expressed support for NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte's proposal to invest five percent of GDP in defense, emphasizing the need for both direct military spending and infrastructure that can also be utilized militarily.

In terms of Middle East peace, Wadephul reiterated the importance of a two-state solution and the need for a breakthrough in negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians over a ceasefire. He stated a desire to collaborate with American partners to achieve this goal. The U.S. and Germany are known for their strong support of Israel, which faces increasing criticism for its military actions in the Gaza Strip.
