Diplomat Akunis Holds Both Qatar and Hamas Responsible for the Security of Captives
In a significant development, Ambassador Ofir Akunis, the Consul General of Israel in New York, has urged continued pressure on the terrorist group Hamas and the country of Qatar regarding the release of the remaining 48 hostages still captive in Gaza.
The call was made during a Monday night reception in New York City, which was hosted in cooperation with various Jewish organizations, foreign representatives, and local government officials. The reception was held to honour the upcoming Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, next week.
Akunis emphasized that Israel's defense is necessary for the protection of the Jewish people worldwide. He also stressed that Qatar and Hamas are responsible for the safety of the hostages.
The negotiations for the release of the hostages have been initiated by the Israeli government, with active involvement and proposals from the United States. Former US President Donald Trump and US envoy Steve Witkoff have been key mediators in the effort for a ceasefire and comprehensive deal with Hamas.
Akunis further highlighted Hamas' response to Israel's actions, stating that it would be more aggressive. He also called on world leaders who criticize Israel to consider what they would do if a terrorist organization invaded their territory, burned entire families alive, raped dozens of women, and kidnapped 251 civilians.
Notably, Hamas officials have signaled a willingness to resume hostage negotiations. Emily Damari's hand gesture has become a symbol during the reception, representing the hope for the safe return of the hostages.
Akunis concluded by urging that pressure should be maintained on both Qatar and Hamas to release everyone currently captive. The international community is urged to support Israel's call for peace and the safe return of its citizens.
