Diocese of Covington arranges for a discussion on the equilibrium of immigrant rights and border control, scheduled for June 25th.

Diocese of Covington arranges discussion on immigrant privileges versus border control for June 25.

The Diocese of Covington and the Intercommunity Sisters Peace and Justice Committee are set to host a panel discussion titled "Immigration: The Catholic Perspective" on June 25. The event will take place at the Diocese of Covington Curia, Bishop Howard Memorial Auditorium, located at 1125 Madison Ave., Covington.

The panel discussion aims to explore immigration issues from the Catholic Church's viewpoint. Attendees can expect a formal presentation, starting with networking and refreshments at 6:30 p.m., followed by the presentation from 7-8:30 p.m.

Sister Maria Francine Stacy, one of the panelists, has emphasized the importance of viewing immigrants not just as pieces on a chess board, but as real people with families and jobs. The panel, with collective experience of over 25 years working directly with immigrants, will speak on the principles of Catholic social teaching, addressing issues such as human dignity, compassion for immigrants and refugees, the moral and ethical responsibilities of welcoming the stranger, and immigration justice.

The panel will also offer updates on the current reality at the U.S./Mexico border and the status of immigration in the U.S. today. It aims to help attendees better understand the immigration situation, not just in the U.S., but globally.

Another basic principle of the Catholic Church's approach to immigration is that a country has the right to regulate its borders and to control immigration. However, it also upholds the right of people to migrate to sustain their lives and the lives of their families, especially when their life is threatened by war, violence, or lack of resources.

The panel discussion will include speakers: Father Michael Comer, Dr. James Camp, Hannah Keegan, Sister Kay Kramer, and Sister Maria Francine Stacy. The event promises to be an insightful and thought-provoking discussion, addressing advocacy for immigrant rights, the importance of community support, and a call to action in line with Catholic values of peace and justice.

It is worth noting that the leaders of every country must balance the responsibility to control their borders and keep their nation safe and strong, with the rights of individuals to migrate. This panel discussion, therefore, offers a valuable opportunity for reflection and dialogue on this complex issue.

Attendees are encouraged to mark their calendars for June 25 and join the discussion at the Diocese of Covington Curia, Bishop Howard Memorial Auditorium. For more information, please visit the Diocese of Covington's website or contact the Intercommunity Sisters Peace and Justice Committee.
