The image shows a black and white photo of a man sitting on top of a soccer field, wearing a t-shirt and a locket around his neck. Behind him, two other people are standing, and the ground is covered in grass. This man is believed to be the legendary football player, who passed away at the age of 89.

Dimitri Payet has announced his retirement from professional football. The former West Ham and France midfielder, known for his creativity and set-piece skill, stepped away from the game on Sunday. His decision comes after a career spanning top clubs in France, England, and Brazil—alongside recent legal troubles in Brazil.

Payet began his career in France before making a name for himself in the Premier League. At West Ham, he became a fan favourite, scoring 15 goals and providing 22 assists in 60 matches. His performances earned him a move to Olympique Marseille in January 2017, where he quickly established himself as a key player.

After spells with AS Saint-Étienne and a return to Marseille, Payet's later years were marked by injuries and less playing time. He later joined Vasco da Gama in Brazil but left the club in July 2024. Since then, he had remained without a team. On the international stage, Payet earned 38 caps for France and played a crucial role in their run to the Euro 2016 final. His club career included stints at several French sides, as well as Vasco da Gama in Brazil. In March 2025, a Brazilian woman filed a complaint against Payet, accusing him of 'physical and psychological violence.' He admitted to an extramarital affair but denied the abuse allegations. The case is now set to go to trial in Brazil. Payet explained his retirement by stating he no longer wished to be part of a project where he couldn't fully commit. His final years in football were overshadowed by both fitness struggles and off-field controversies.

Payet's retirement closes a career that saw highs in Europe and international football. The legal proceedings in Brazil will now proceed, following allegations he has denied. His impact on clubs like West Ham and Marseille, along with his role in France's Euro 2016 campaign, remains a notable part of his legacy.
