Differentiating Black-Red Signals from Traffic Lights: An Overview of Their Dissimilarities
After 100 days in power, the Black-Red coalition, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), is grappling with a series of challenges and controversies. The government's performance has been met with public dissatisfaction, internal coalition disputes, and heated debates over migration policy.
A recent poll showed that 69% of Germans are dissatisfied with the federal government's work, while only 28% are satisfied. Chancellor Merz's communication style is seen as unconvincing by 61%, and only 26% view him as trustworthy.
The coalition's internal discord is evident in ongoing friction, such as the failed election of new judges for the Federal Constitutional Court. This dispute reflects broader ideological divides within the coalition, with the Union and SPD facing more significant problems than the election of constitutional judges. The gap in financial planning for 2027 to 2029 stands at around 172 billion euros, and the alternative to tax revenue filling the treasury is savings, which could require reforming the social systems.
Controversies surrounding migration and security policy have also been a significant challenge. After a stabbing attack by a rejected asylum seeker, the CDU pushed for migration and homeland security resolutions. These resolutions, which passed with votes from the CDU, FDP, and AfD but were rejected by SPD and Greens, have sparked widespread criticism. The CDU is accused of indirectly cooperating with the far-right AfD, drawing criticism from political leaders, religious groups, and former Chancellor Angela Merkel, and causing mass protests.
Efforts to limit migrant intake legislation later failed despite AfD support. The coalition's decision to extend border checks and push for more deportations, including of minors, has also been a contentious social issue.
The coalition has passed several laws during its first 100 days, including the "Growth boosters", budget, pension package, "Construction turbo", and migration policy. However, many citizens feel these measures have not yet delivered tangible benefits. Concerns persist over economic stability, infrastructure delays, and adaptation to global economic pressures.
Cultural policy controversies have also added to the coalition's internal tensions and public dissatisfaction. Proposals like banning gender-inclusive language in government and public media have sparked criticism as paternalistic and outdated.
The government has created a National Security Council to better coordinate security policies, but its implementation and impact are still pending. The relationship with Poland and France is noticeably cooling, adding to the coalition's challenges.
Despite these difficulties, Chancellor Merz has admitted that not everything has gone smoothly and promised to adjust. Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) has proposed extending working hours, but her proposal has not been warmly received by Chancellor Merz.
Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil still doesn't want to compare the current coalition to the Traffic Light coalition. However, the relationship between the coalition partners is strained over small issues, with the SPD, Greens, and Left applauding together in the Bundestag. Trust in Union faction leader Jens Spahn (CDU) is shaken within the SPD, and his weakened position as parliamentary group leader is evident.
The electricity tax issue has caused tension within the coalition, with strong protest from the Union when Klingbeil went public with it. Merz's decision to partially halt weapons exports to Israel was uncoordinated with the Union faction and the CSU, causing criticism and the need for a public explanation.
As the Black-Red coalition navigates these challenges, it faces political polarization, public skepticism, socio-economic pressures, and sensitive migration issues, which complicate governance and threaten coalition cohesion.
