Weight Loss Revolution: Meet Zepbound, FDA's New Approval for Long-term Management

In a groundbreaking move, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has greenlit Eli Lilly's latest drug, Zepbound, for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes under the brand name Mounjaro. In an even more significant leap, the FDA has also authorized its use for prolonged weight control. This is a significant milestone for a medication frequently utilized off-label for weight reduction.

Who's the Ideal Candidate for Zepbound?

Adults who are overweight or have a Body Mass Index (BMI) exceeding 30 are prime candidates for Zepbound. It is also suggested for individuals with obesity (BMI 27 or higher) and those with weight-related medical issues such as hypertension, sleep apnea, or cardiovascular diseases.

Unveiling Zepbound's Magic

Zepbound works its charm by boosting the release of Insulin by mimicking two hormones: GLP-1 and GIP. It suppresses appetite and decelerates digestion post-meals, thereby making the user feel full. Medications popular for weight loss, like Semaglutid-based Wegovy from Novo Nordisk, primarily target GLP-1.

Zepbound Debuts with Six Strengths

Available in six potencies, from 2.5 mg to 15 mg, the medication can be obtained on prescription at both brick-and-mortar and online pharmacies, as per Eli Lilly's press statement.

Prescription and Usage Tips

Like other weight loss drugs, Zepbound is an injection administered once a week. Eli Lilly recommends pairing the medication with a calorie-restricted diet and increased physical activity.

Precautions, Precautions, Precautions

Eli Lilly emphasizes the avoidance of combining Zepbound with other weight-loss drugs, such as Ozempic and Wegovy.

Triumphant Trials

Higher doses of Zepbound in clinical trials led to an average weight loss exceeding 20% over 72 weeks, surpassing other authorized weight-loss medications' values.

Potential Hiccups

Common side effects include digestive issues such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, and stomach pain. Serious issues may include thyroid complications and gallbladder difficulties. For a comprehensive list, consult your healthcare provider.

Cost, Cost, Cost

Without insurance, Zepbound might set you back around $1,060 per month, just slightly above Mounjaro's list price of $1,023 per month. Rest assured, Eli Lilly has planned to release a savings card for commercial insurance holders, reducing the cost for eligible patients to $25 per month.

Supply and Demand Challenge

The demand for weight-loss therapies is soaring, yet some treatments encounter supply shortages. Currently, Mounjaro remains on the FDA's drug shortage list but is indicated as available for all dosage strengths.
