Unveiling the Hidden Side of the '90s Icon - Diddl's Secret Grandma Revealed!

For almost a quarter of a century, Diddl, the vibrant plush hero, was a beloved guest in numerous children's rooms, triggering a collecting frenzy. Yet, in 2014, demand waned, and the famous jumping mouse disappeared from the shelves.

Meet the elusive mastermind behind Diddl, Thomas Goletz. He despises public appearances and prefers to let his creations do the talking.

Accidentally To Stardom

By chance, Diddl entered Thomas Goletz's life in 1990. A passionate creator of cartoons and school blackboards, Goletz's youth icons were Asterix and Baloo the Bear. After a career change to graphic design, he chanced upon the iconic character while sketching animals.

Diddl took the world by storm as children's favorite plush toy, filling houses with a diverse range of products, from bed linens to backpacks and tins.

The '90s Mascot

The success was staggering.

"Diddl's cheerful appearance infected everyone with his optimistic vibes," says Goletz in remembrance of the era.

Over 10,000 products were sold in more than 30 countries. Manufactured primarily in China, the production team expanded to 400 employees, nearly tripling in size. Goletz and his creation were at the height of popularity during the '90s, with grand sales of 150 million euros in 2003, according to "Spiegel."

"Of course, I didn't expect this level of success," Goletz confessed. "But, post-German reunification, there was a sense of optimism and a desire for unity. Diddl's positive, bubblegum-colored toys resonated well with the '90s, becoming a symbol of the era," he added.

Fans crowded to catch a glimpse of Diddl during the roadshow celebrating his 10th birthday in 2000.

The Twilight of a Toy

Unfortunately, the company missed out on the digital wave. Reflecting on their missed opportunities, Goletz admitted, “We were primarily focused on analog products and should have dedicated more attention to emerging digital platforms and smartphones.”

In 2014, the end of an era saw production discontinued. Yet, the love for Diddl remains strong. Fans thank Goletz for the cherished childhood memories, and the plush mouse marvels at its rebirth in the form of mini films, the “Diddl Mini Movies.”

The Creator's Secret

The elusive father of the famous mouse opens up about creating the icon straight from the heart:

Diddl's very own "nana" is a closely guarded secret.
Diddl's anniversary is celebrated on August 24, 1990.
Diddl still receives heartfelt thanks from adults who grew up with his collection.
Diddl had its very own fan mail division.
The company hired a team of up to 40 graphic designers to support Goletz.

With a nostalgic smile, Goletz reminds us, “Without my Diddl, I would have been nothing but an overworked designer. And Diddl, destined for greatness, wouldn’t have become anyone's beloved memory of '90s innocence and joy.”
