Dictator Guterres label Gaza predicament as "unbearable"
The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed concern over Israel's determination to continue the ground offensive in Gaza without opening to serious negotiations for a ceasefire. This comes after Guterres strongly condemned Israel's further escalation on Tuesday.
The offensive, which began on Tuesday night, has so far claimed at least 17 lives, including seven in Gaza City, as of Wednesday morning. Aid organizations are calling for measures to end the war between Israel and Hamas, stating that states must use all available political, economic, and legal means to intervene.
The Israeli army has attacked over 150 targets in Gaza City over the past two days, with most of the attacks occurring in the city where the ground offensive started. Tragically, a pregnant woman is among the reported victims.
The UN building in Gaza, where Palestinian refugees had sought shelter, was also bombed. This action, which has been met with international outrage, underscores the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The EU foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, presented a 'robust sanctions package' in Brussels. The package includes a partial suspension of the EU's association agreement with Israel and sanctions against specific individuals and groups. The EU sanctions package targets Israel, including sanctions against violent Israeli settlers, two Israeli government ministers, and members of Hamas.
However, Germany is among the key blockers that may prevent the EU sanctions package from securing the necessary majority among EU countries.
Aid organizations, including Save the Children, have published a joint message, stating that if UN member states continue to treat their legal obligations under international law as optional, they are not only complicit but also setting a dangerous precedent for the future. The offensive is feared to cost the lives of thousands of people, and the status of the hostages still in the hands of Hamas remains unclear, with the possibility that Hamas could use them as a bargaining tool in the middle of the fighting.
The aim of the offensive is to capture the city of Gaza. The Israeli army spokesman, Effie Defrin, has suggested that the offensive could last for many months. However, an agreement with the Israeli government seems to be off the table with the ongoing ground offensive.
This ongoing conflict underscores the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to bring about a peaceful resolution. As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial that all parties involved adhere to international law and prioritize the protection of civilians.
