Diaz and Tatis steer Padres to a 5-3 victory against the Giants, securing a 2-game series triumph.
WEDNESDAY RECAP: PADRES SWEEP GIANTS WITH DIÁZ'S HOMER AND TATIS'S TRIO
San Diego, CA — Elias Diáz notched a homer and two runs, while Fernando Tatis Jr. put up a three-hit performance, propelling the San Diego Padres to a 5-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday. This convincing win marked a two-game sweep, pushing the Padres ahead of the Giants into second place in the intense NL West division.
The action unfolded in the third inning when Diáz launched a line drive homer off Landen Roupp (2-2), giving the Padres a comfortable 2-0 lead. A spectator wearing a Giants T-shirt attempted to catch the ball over the fence but, unfortunately for him, the ball ricocheted off his wrist. After a thorough review by the crew chief, it was confirmed that this wasn't a fan interference case, allowing the home run to stand. This marked Diáz's second homer of the season.
In the following inning, Tatis contributed an RBI single, scoring Manny Machado. Later, Jose Iglesias scampered home on a two-out infield hit by Luis Arraez. Arraez, who had returned from a seven-day concussion injured list just the night before, picked up his first triple of the season in the sixth inning, driving in Diáz with two outs.
Michael King (4-1) put up an impressive outing for the Padres, limiting the Giants to just one run and three hits over 5⅓ innings. He struck out six batters and issued just one walk.
Robert Suárez closed out the game for his major league-leading 12th save.
The Giants managed to hit late homers from Heliot Ramos and Mike Yastrzemski, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Padres' victory.
A PIVOTAL MOMENT
With runners on first and second and one out in the sixth, Machado, the third baseman, performed a spectacular diving save to his left, managing to field Willy Adames' one-hopper. Impressively, while still on his back, he threw to second to force out Mike Yastrzemski.
KEY STAT
San Francisco's Matt Chapman struck out three times during the series, marking the fifth time in his career that he recorded consecutive three-plus strikeouts in the same series.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Giants will have RHP Justin Verlander (0-2, 4.99 ERA) on the mound at home against Colorado on Thursday night. In contrast, RHP Dylan Cease (1-2, 5.76) is anticipated to start for the Padres on Friday night in the opening game of a series at Pittsburgh.
