Diamondbacks remove veteran pitcher Kendall Graveman from their active roster, designating him for assignment.
After a tumultuous tenure with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Kendall Graveman has been released by the team. The relief pitcher, who signed a one-year deal for 2025 worth $1.35 million, was designated for assignment in August.
Graveman had struggled with injuries throughout the season, undergoing season-ending surgery in 2024 and battling a lower back injury and a hip impingement in 2025. These issues, combined with performance concerns, led to his release by the Diamondbacks mid-August.
The pitcher's contract with the Diamondbacks included a mutual option for 2026, but with his release, the option year no longer comes into effect. Graveman had a 1-0 record and a 7.13 ERA in 19 appearances for the team.
Meanwhile, Juan Morillo has been recalled by the Diamondbacks. Morillo joined the team before the start of their three-game series at Texas. He had a 4.94 ERA in 31 appearances for the Diamondbacks earlier this season.
In a related move, right-hander Jeff Brigham was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks, and Arizona also claimed right-hander Gus Varland, who was waived last week by the Chicago White Sox. Varland was sent to Triple-A Reno to make room for Morillo.
Graveman, who started his career with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014, also played for the Oakland Athletics, Chicago White Sox, Seattle Mariners, and Houston Astros. He has a 38-43 career record and a 4.03 ERA in 299 games over 10 big league seasons.
Despite his release, Graveman plans to continue pitching. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo described the conversation as a tough one. Graveman earned total bonuses of $150,000 for pitching at least 15 games this year.
