Dialogue initiative announced by Sheinbaum towards families of Plenitude Crematorium victims in Ciudad Juárez
In the ongoing investigation of the Plenitud crematorium case, where 386 bodies were found, progress has been made in the identification of victims. As of early August 2025, 67 bodies have been identified.
The Directorate of Peritical Services and Forensic departments are working diligently on this process, which has been slow and challenging due to the advanced decomposition of many bodies. In the identification work, 71 fingerprint samples were sent to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INE), resulting in six matches.
The President, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, has announced her intention to establish dialogue with families affected by the Plenitud Crematorium case. To attend to their needs, the Secretary of Security, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, will establish contact with the families through the Victims Commission. Notification and psychological support to the families of the victims have begun.
Of the identified bodies, 13 have been notified and delivered, 2 are pending delivery, and 12 are currently being notified. Among the bodies found, there is one fetus and three minors, including a six to seven-year-old girl and a seven to eight-year-old boy.
The investigation of the Plenitud crematorium is the responsibility of the Chihuahua State Attorney General's Office (FGE). The local Attorney General's Office of Ciudad Juárez, led by State Attorney General César Jáuregui Moreno, is leading the inquiry. The investigation includes searches of residences belonging to the two detainees: the owner José Luis A.C. and the crematorium's sole employee Facundo M.R., who face accusations of clandestine burial and improper handling of bodies. The inquiry is also expanding to include government agencies responsible for regulatory oversight of the crematorium.
The focus of the investigation is on documents and forensic evidence to establish victim identities, while also examining potential regulatory failures by oversight bodies. The city government has also been providing direct support to families affected by the incident.
It is important to note that the president's decision to take over the case of the Plenitud crematorium does not apply to the case of Israel Vallarta. The president has accused the Calderón sexenio of exhibiting judicial manipulation in the case of Israel Vallarta.
In other news, the Mexico City Metro will begin interventions at certain stations on Line B, but no further details were provided. The FGE has attended to 1,692 people, including 1,120 potentially affected family members at the "Plenitud" crematorium.
Family members have placed messages at the Attorney General's Office demanding answers from state authorities. On August 2, families protested in front of the State Attorney General's Office (FGE), Zona Norte, demanding justice, transparency, and dignified treatment. The Unit for Crimes Against Peace, Security of Persons, and Public Faith received nine fraud complaints against funeral homes.
There are still 181 bodies in process to extract fingerprints for identification. The president has stated that she will support the Chihuahua State Attorney General's Office in whatever they need, but did not take over the case of the Plenitud crematorium.
